Dan Carter, 85, of Hopkinsville

Daniel Denton “Dan” Carter, 85, of Hopkinsville, KY died Wednesday morning, August 27, 2025 at his residence.

A celebration of life will be held from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 31, 2025 at the Hopkinsville Golf & Country Club. Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

A native of Monroe County, KY, Dan was born November 28, 1939 the son of the late Daniel Spencer Carter and Marie Luree Bowman Carter. Dan was retired from the Kentucky State Police. He also served in the Kentucky National Guard. Dan served as a Magistrate for District 7 from 1981 – 1988. He also served as County Judge Pro Tem and a member of the board of directors for the Kentucky Association of Counties.

In addition to his law enforcement, armed services, and political service; Dan was a business owner, realtor, appraiser, and auctioneer. Dan was a former Director of the Christian County Board of Realtors. He was inducted into the Christian County Realtors Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the American Association of Appraisers Board of Directors.

Dan served on the Christian County Board of Health, the Christian County Airport Board, and the Christian County Board of Zoning & Adjustments. He was a charter member of the Civitan Club, Western Hills Golf Course, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was also a member of the Hopkinsville Golf & Country Club and Hillcrest Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Jack Carter; and a sister: Jeanne Harlan.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years: Shirley Carter; his daughters: Dr. Annetta Carter Johnson of Hopkinsville, KY and Tammy Carter Hendricks of Lexington, KY; his brother: Benjamin (Cheryl) Carter of Elizabethtown, KY; his sister: Sandra (Billy) Dowell of Mount Vernon, KY; and his grandchildren: Luke Denton Johnson, Danielle Hendricks, and Alexa Hendricks.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Max’s Hope Pet Rescue or Pennyroyal Hospice.
