Beshear Contemplating Presidential Run

Could Andy Beshear be running for U.S. President in 2028?

The Kentucky governor is officially mulling the idea.

When asked directly about the questions one must answer before entering the race during his Thursday “Team Kentucky” update, Beshear offered a light chuckle, and a lengthy anecdote.

Beshear’s comment comes less than two weeks out from the Fancy Farm Picnic, among the nation’s largest political stumping grounds, and about a week after visiting South Carolina’s Democratic strongholds as a moderate.

In an early May report from politico.com, it was noted that Beshear is “actively laying the tracks for a potential 2028 campaign,” meeting privately with donors, recording a podcast and now “regularly popping up” at national events. A former Kamala Harris communications staffer is consulting for him, he spoke at the Future Forward donor summit in California, and conservative activist Charlie Kirk has already tabbed him as “among the toughest Democrats to beat.”

Beshear was also recently featured in the July 21 issue of Vogue magazine, further introducing him to the national mainstream, and two months ago he wrapped a long podcast episode of “The Weekly Show” with popular satirist, comedian and political commentator Jon Stewart.

Beshear noted being in Vogue “wasn’t on his BINGO card” for 2025, or ever, but credited the Commonwealth and its gains over the last six years as a key reason there’s outside interest on what’s going on in the Bluegrass State — and he’s enjoying telling Kentucky’s story.

The Commonwealth’s political gravity has been the focus of national attention since long-running Senator Mitch McConnell announced this was his final term in office — opening a power vacuum in the Republican diaspora that many hope to fill.

Businessman Nate Morris, Rep. Andy Barr, former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, businessowner Michael Faris and Kentucky’s top-ranking Democrat Pam Stevenson have all entered into the 2026 Primary fold, and more names could be on the way.
