Families looking to harvest their own Christmas tree from Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area can begin securing their permits later this month.
Christmas Tree Permits will be available online only from November 28 through December 24.
Starting November 28, visitors can go to the LBL permits webpage, set up an account, and obtain a free Christmas Tree Permit. Those who have previously made camping reservations or purchased any LBL permit online can simply log in using their existing account. After securing the permit, users must complete it, print it, sign it, and display it on their vehicle dashboard while searching for a tree.
Each permit allows one family to cut one cedar tree, and only cedar trees may be harvested. Trees may be cut throughout most of Land Between the Lakes, but several areas are strictly off-limits. Cutting is not allowed within sight of US 68/KY 80, along Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway, in cemeteries, near campgrounds or facilities such as the Elk & Bison Prairie, in Nature Watch Areas, timber sale areas, or other maintained and mowed locations.
Again, LBL officials emphasize that no trees may be cut along The Trace or Highway 68/80, and visitors should review the cutting guidelines before heading out.
Although most of the recreation area was spared major tornado damage, officials caution that some sections still contain storm-damaged timber. Visitors should be alert for unstable trees, loose overhead limbs, and ongoing timber salvage operations while exploring.
