Trigg County’s “America Turns 250” Committee has called a meeting for 5:30 PM Thursday at the Emergency Operations Center on Jefferson Street — looking to get things more in line for celebrations around the nation’s big birthday in 2026.
Already, the organization has identified several events and activities that exist as part of next year’s calendar, including Memorial Day, Flag Day and, of course, July 4. However, more plans could be made for Memorial Day, Veterans Day and 9/11.
This includes, but is not limited to:
+ A geocaching path, using veterans’ markers and other historical memorial across the county
+ A children’s bicycle parade with decorated bikes and costumes
+ A movie night on the Renaissance Stage during the summer, perhaps a showing of “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” “An American Tail,” “Monuments Men” or some other patriotic film
+ A time capsule, where collected items of interest are buried for opening years in the future
+ A holiday potluck or hot dog extravaganza
+ A corn hole and/or disc golf tournament
+ A “Liberty” tree planting
+ A “Great American” pollution clean up
+ A public flag retirement ceremony
+ A “Missing Man” table demonstration
+ A scheduled Cadiz Cruz-In
+ A 5K walk/run
+ A public reading of the Hometown Heroes banners
+ A Little River canoe trip
+ Announcing history and local trivia in The Cadiz Record and on WKDZ/WHVO
+ A “Dress Your Pig” contest
+ A Janice Mason Art Museum activity, featuring children’s art with a patriotic theme
+ And a run at some early American activities, like hoop races, sewing the Betsy Ross star, pioneer cooking, a cake walk and a three-legged race
It’s possible a mid-summer celebration could come to fruition, as could a Memorial Day or July 4 parade.
Field of Flags will again be present beginning June 14, 2026, and courtesy of American Legion Post 74, while Fireworks at Lake Barkley have already been confirmed for July 3, 2026. The next day, there will once again be a recitation of the “Declaration of Independence” by the Sons of American Revolution in West Cadiz Park.
WoodmenLife officials are also in the midst of planning a 9/11 2026 recognition.
Present for their October meeting: Mitzi Thomas-Lawson, Paul Fourshee, Paula Flood, Mark Turner, Bob Brame, Steve Darnell, Marcus Frye, Jan Culwell, Todd Wallace and Stan Humphries.
