The Hopkinsville Rotary Club will cook 140 turkeys next week to provide Thanksgiving meals for every family served by the Boys and Girls Club, expanding a project that began last year with about 40 turkeys.

Rotary member Cody Willis will begin cooking at 4 a.m. Wednesday, and volunteers are invited to assist throughout the day. Club members said early morning help is especially needed, and breakfast will be available for those who come out.

In addition to the turkeys, Rotary members and local Interact Clubs are assembling meal kits that include boxed mashed potatoes, vegetables and other sides. Volunteers plan to pack the boxes Tuesday afternoon, following the club’s regular meeting. Families will pick up the meals at the Boys and Girls Club throughout the day Wednesday.

Organizers said the effort comes during a time of heightened food insecurity in the community. Planter’s Bank is also collecting canned goods to support the project as part of its season of giving.

Rotary leaders thanked the board for approving funding to cover the cost of the turkeys and supplies.
