Cadiz City Council heard a common complaint Tuesday night, when Hannah Claussen brought a concern to the table.
Alongside her husband and News Edge Media Group employee, Joshua, she kindly asked for city officials to improve enforcement measures regarding the leash law — which, apparently, is frequently ignored by constituents and neighbors in town.
Several times over the last few weeks, Claussen said she has tried to take evening walks — only to be nervous, and other times thwarted, by loose dogs in her neighborhood.
Claussen noted that she had “called Dispatch” for most of her issues, but because there are “so many,” it’s hard to ring for help — knowing that’s an emergency line.
Councilwoman Susie Hendricks said she has heard similar complaints.
City Administrative Officer Jack Lingenfelter said it was likely he would send out a digital public service announcement to local phones, reminding them of the leash law — and the certainty of renewed enforcement.
In other council news:
+ The council twice went into executive session, but for unrelated reasons: deliberations on the future acquisition or sale of real property by a public agency, but only when publicity would be likely to affect the value of a specific piece of property to be acquired for public use or sold by a public agency; and discussions of proposed or pending litigation against or on behalf of the public agency.
No action was taken after either scenario.
+ Lingenfelter noted that, after discussions with Public Works Director Craig Oakley, city water meters are in “dire need” of replacement. Nearly one-third are either “failing” or reaching “end-of-life.” A rough estimate from Fortiline, Lingenfelter said, would be $600,000 to replace every city business and customer, but would also allow for digital water readings and an online database
+ In terms of garbage collection, Lingenfelter said that bid advertising had published October 16, and that a second publishing was scheduled for November 13. A bid closing date has been set for November 24, in which the council will then review in annual option.
+ Council members also heard the first reading of the RV Park annexation, with a second reading and likely approval planned for Tuesday, December 2. Lingenfelter also noted that there is pending additional paperwork for a second annexation located inside the Industrial Park.
