Kentucky’s First Woman Governor Passes Away

Kentucky’s first and only female Governor Martha Layne Collins is being remembered for her many accomplishments while leading the state.

Governor Andy Beshear announced Saturday morning that Governor Collins had passed away. Martha Layne Collins served as Governor of Kentucky from 1983 to 1987. She also served as Lt. Governor under John Y. Brown from 1979 until she was elected Governor in 1983.

Governor Beshear credited Governor Collins with being a powerhouse and transforming the commonwealth through many major accomplishments. Among the list of contributions was bringing Toyota to Kentucky, which was the first site in the United States. Governor Beshear says Governor Collins created a foundation for the state to build a strong future upon, and her legacy will continue to benefit Kentucky families for generations.

Beshear noted Collins was a proud Kentuckian, and she will be greatly missed. He encouraged Kentuckians to remember to send up a thank you with their prayers as they remember a remarkable woman who made an undeniable difference in our state.
