The day began with a stop at the Seven Springs Straw Blanket manufacturing facility where Joe Nichols discussed how they began making straw mats and how that business has impacted the farming operation. Donovan Washer talked to the leadership class about the crops they raise on Stowe Farms and the importance of being an advocate for agriculture. Class members learned about beef cattle and advocating for agriculture during a stop at Circle F Cattle Company from David Fourqurean and Alan Watts. Following a lunch stop at Farm Credit Mid-America to learn about the financial side of agriculture from Brandon Garnett, class members learned about the livestock processing industry during a visit Chris Milam at Hampton Premium Meats. The leadership class concluded their agriculture day at H & R Agri-power, where they heard from President Wayne Hunt about the growth of the Hopkinsville-based dealership and Hunt’s service on the Kentucky Ag Development Board. They were also led on a tour of the facility by Regional Manager Jim Lancaster.
Trigg County Agriculture Extension Agent David Fourqurean coordinated the agriculture day for the leadership class and said the stops aimed to show the class the importance of all aspects of the agriculture industry.
