A fire caused the evacuation of an assisted living facility and led to the arrest of a Cadiz man on Shelby Street on Sunday afternoon.

Cadiz Police say the fire started on the bed of 68-year-old Billy Cottrell at Better Senior Living and was extinguished by their sprinkler system.

The building was evacuated by staff before firefighters arrived.

Burn marks were reportedly found on furniture, along with cigarette butts on the floor. Police say witnesses stated Cottrell admitted to smoking in his room, and that started the fire.

The facility reportedly has a policy prohibiting smoking.

Police say no one was injured, but after an investigation, Cottrell was arrested and charged with second-degree arson and 60 counts of second-degree wanton endangerment.
