ExxonMobil is taking a major step into the advanced synthetic graphite business through the acquisition of Superior Graphite’s technology, U.S.-based assets, and select international offices.

The agreement, announced September 8, pairs ExxonMobil’s scale and expertise with Superior Graphite’s more than 100 years of industry experience.

The move supports ExxonMobil’s strategy to establish a robust domestic synthetic graphite supply chain, a critical resource for the growing energy transition.

Unlike traditional mined graphite, synthetic graphite can be produced from carbon-rich refining streams, making it more consistent, scalable, and efficient. It is also expected to outperform natural graphite in quality and durability.

Synthetic graphite is a key material in electric vehicle batteries and stationary energy storage systems, where it serves as the anode component and plays a major role in charging speed and battery life. With demand for higher-performance batteries on the rise, ExxonMobil expects synthetic graphite to become increasingly essential.

Superior Graphite contributes deep industry knowledge, valuable intellectual property, and proven processes that are:
+ Less energy-intensive
+ More land-efficient
+ And capable of higher throughput

ExxonMobil brings the scale, technology, and operational expertise to expand production and meet rising demand.

Together, the companies aim to deliver graphite that enables faster charging, longer battery life, and greater support for U.S. energy security and critical mineral supply chains.

ExxonMobil is one of the world’s largest publicly traded energy and petrochemical companies, with core businesses in Upstream, Product Solutions, and Low Carbon Solutions. The company develops products and technologies that support modern life and advance lower-emission solutions, including a 2030 plan to cut greenhouse gas intensity across operations.
