Sponsored by Cadiz Chapter 20 WoodmenLife, Trigg County Middle School students took a few moments “In Honor and Remembrance” Thursday morning — as officials and fellow classmates unfurled an American flag large enough to fill Midcat Gymnasium.
According to WoodmenLife’s Steve Darnall, it’s something the organization tries to showcase in different ways annually to stoke conversation, thought and reflection of September 11, 2001 — a morning of heinous attacks in New York City that brought down the Twin Towers, and fundamentally changed the way the world now thinks and operates socially, politically and mechanically — especially at large transportation hubs like airports.
This effort has previously been held at a Trigg County football game, as well as the Trigg County Senior Citizens Center, but this is the first time it’s been held at the school — for a recurring theme of education that held throughout the day.
Patriotism, he said, is a stalwart hallmark of WoodmenLife — a group that trails only the U.S. military in purchasers of the nation’s colors. From there, they get used for public demonstrations, education or are donated to non-profit organizations in need of the Stars & Stripes.
Darnall said Chapter 20 will be extremely busy in the next couple of months. Six more flags, honoring the six service academies, will soon fly courtesy of the group at the Trigg County Veterans Memorial next to Vinson’s Cemetery — probably within the next 30 days. Meanwhile, WoodmenLife’s national focus is on hunger, especially with veterans. So, in conjunction with Helping Hands, a food drive will be held at Food Giant in Cadiz from 3-5 PM Thursday, September 18.
