The Woodlands Nature Station at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is preparing for a special family event over Labor Day weekend.
Kids Adventure Weekend will take place August 30 through September 1, offering children and families an opportunity to explore the outdoors while learning useful skills.
This weekend is designed to introduce children to a variety of outdoor activities in a fun, hands-on way. Programs throughout the three-day event will include lessons on knot-tying, how to properly use a compass, foraging basics, campfire cooking, and more. Organizers say the goal is to encourage children to feel more comfortable and confident in nature while also fostering an appreciation for outdoor recreation.
In addition to the daily programs, the Woodlands Nature Station will host guided sunset kayak trips on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1. The trips run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and will take paddlers through the quiet backwaters of a Barkley Lake bay.
With the help of experienced naturalists, participants will search for wildlife such as beavers, osprey, and bald eagles, while also learning about the unique ecosystem of the region. Reservations are required for the kayak trips and can be made by calling 270-924-2020.
The Woodlands Nature Station is located at 3146 Silver Trail Road in Cadiz, Kentucky. Admission is $7 for adults and teens ages 16 and older, while children 15 and under are admitted free.
The Friends of Land Between the Lakes, in partnership with the USDA Forest Service, helps provide educational programs, interpretive services, and support for the nature station and the larger recreation area. The nonprofit relies on memberships, gift shop sales, and donations to sustain its work.
