Back down in Class 2A for the first time since Shannon Burcham led the program in 2010, Trigg County football coach Chris Ezell and his Wildcats have much to look forward to in 2025.
The fifth-year skipper brought unbridled, natural preseason enthusiasm for Tuesday’s Cadiz Rotary Club meeting — hopes of hosting a playoff game this November well intact and unfettered, and nothing but expectation and accountability up ahead.
In a rarity, Trigg County opens its season with four-straight home games — beginning next Friday, August 22, with a 6 PM kickoff against Ohio County in the Wildcat Chevrolet Bowl, which also offers a nightcap contest between the Fort Campbell Falcons and Clarksville Northwest.
Thanks to Athletic Director Doug Gloyd, as well as some generous local and alumni support, Ezell said Perdue Field will soon look less like a nondescript stadium — and more like the home of the Black, White and Gray.
For the first time in his tenure, Ezell said the Wildcats will don new uniforms this season — which cost the district around $20,000. The team used their previous threads a little more than 48 months — many times Ezell and his staff scrubbing stains on pants and jerseys with OxyClean over the weekends.
Ezell also knows pigskin is typically a public school’s most expensive sport, listing equipment, stadium maintenance, staffing and other responsibilities as key costs.
But when asked what his Wildcats wishlist would be, Ezell said three items would go a long way in practice and preparation.
The total cost for those items, he said, would be around $8,000. Ezell said he only requested $3,000 from the Cadiz Rotary Club last year, and this season asked for only $1,500 — hoping to build team unity through a trip to Venture River.
Not including freshmen, Ezell said he has 32 players on his roster for a schedule that now includes Caldwell County, Crittenden County, Fort Campbell, Mayfield and Todd County Central as district opponents.
As such, he said he would like to see more robust attendance in the younger ranks, especially since guys like Davaree Gude, Brody Renfroe, Caden Scott — and now a healthy Timmy Williams — have been, or will continue to be, a big part of this growing picture.
The top four teams make the playoffs, and the district’s No. 1 and No. 2 seeds host the earlier rounds — something the previous two squads didn’t get to experience.
And it’s a feeling the Wildcats want to wash.
