The City of Hopkinsville is reminding residents and businesses that sidewalks are for walking, not blocking. City ordinances (§99.10 & §99.11) prohibit placing vehicles, merchandise, or any other obstruction on sidewalks without prior authorization.
Public Works officials say their approach begins with education. First-time violations typically result in a courtesy notice, but repeat offenses may bring fines of up to $500 and/or vehicle towing at the owner’s expense (§99.99).
For those who need temporary access, such as using a sidewalk as a driveway during construction or moving, the city offers a free permit. The permit process helps ensure that any damage is repaired and the walkway is restored for safe public use.
Keeping sidewalks clear improves safety and accessibility for all residents, including children, seniors, and people using wheelchairs or strollers.
