Mary Glynn Braswell Skaggs, age 86, a longtime resident of Cadiz, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Lexington Premier Nursing & Rehab in Lexington, Kentucky.
She was born on September 25, 1938, in Kuttawa, Kentucky, to John Randolph Braswell and Mary Florence Holsapple Braswell.
After graduating from Reidland High School in 1956, Mary earned a Bachelor’s degree from Murray State University and her Master’s degree from Western Kentucky University. She dedicated over 45 years to education as a teacher at South Christian, McLean County, Outwood, and Trigg County Elementary Schools, as well as teaching in Clarksville, Tennessee. Following her retirement from the classroom, she continued her passion for teaching by overseeing child care facilities with the Kentucky Office of the Inspector General. Mary’s commitment to nurturing young minds and advocating for children was evident in every role she held.
Mary was a longtime member of Cadiz Baptist Church, where her husband, the late Rev. Harold Skaggs, pastored for many years. She was an integral part of his ministry, always by his side, providing unwavering support and love. She was also an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames of America, where she took pride in honoring her heritage.
Mary was an avid reader, traveled extensively and had a profound appreciation for history and the arts, enjoying classical music and old hymns. She cherished her family above all and joyfully embraced her role as “Mimi” and the special bond she shared with her granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 42 years, Rev. Harold Skaggs, on July 5, 2002; her parents; and her sister, Virginia Lynn Braswell Manor.
She is survived by her sons, Donnie Skaggs (Rose) of Mt. Juliet, TN and Jamey Skaggs (Emily) of Lexington, KY; and her granddaughters, Rachel Skaggs (David Carlson) Hanna Guthrie (Timothy), Jayne Skaggs, and Kathryn Skaggs.
Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, Inc., 138 Main Street in Cadiz, where the family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Friday, August 15, 2025. A graveside service will follow at 1:30 PM at East End Cemetery, 171 Main Street in Cadiz.
