Anne Cooke Adams Embry, 99, of Hopkinsville, KY died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2025, at her residence.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dan Huck officiating. Burial will follow in Rosedale Cemetery in Pembroke, KY. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at the church. Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
A native of Christian County, KY, she was born May 14, 1926, at Church Hill, KY, the daughter of the late John William Adams and Julia Talmage Cooke Adams.
Known throughout her life to her many friends and family as “Cookie”, she grew up in Hopkinsville while regularly spending time on her mother’s family farm at St. Elmo, KY. Following her graduation from Hopkinsville High School in 1944, Cookie attended Ward-Belmont, Bethel Women’s Junior College and the University of Kentucky graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. While at the University of Kentucky, Mrs. Embry became a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta women’s fraternity.
An active member of First United Methodist Church, Cookie served the church at various times as Sanctuary Chair, secretary of the Administrative Board, member of the Nursey School Board, chairman of the Kitchen Committee, leader, secretary and treasurer of the Friendship Circle. In addition, Mrs. Embry also taught five-year-old Sunday school at First United Methodist for 10 years.
Cookie was also heavily involved in the civic life of Hopkinsville and Christian County for much of her life. She was a Founder and Treasurer of the Hopkinsville Junior Auxiliary, a Board Member of the Hopkinsville Community Concert Association and Secretary of the Civic Music Association (forerunners of the Pennyroyal Arts Council), the Membership Chair for the Friends of the Hopkinsville Christian County Public Library, a Board Member of the Pennyroyal Area Museum, a Member of the Trail of Tears Commission, a dedicated Girl Scout Troop Leader, President of the Town & Country Garden Club, and President of the Church Hill Grange.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Thomas Green Embry of Hopkinsville, KY; her brothers: William C. Adams and Ben S. Adams; many beloved aunts and uncles; and her son-in- law: John Christian Mahre of Hopkinsville, KY.
Survivors include her daughter: Anne Cooke Embry Mahre of Hopkinsville, KY; and her grandchildren: John Christian Cooke Mahre and his wife, Leslie, and Anne Julia Elizabeth Mahre.
