HistoriCorps and the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area are calling for volunteers to help restore a piece of American history.
From August 31 through October 3, volunteers of all skill levels are invited to join in rehabilitating the historic Homeplace Tool Barn, located at the nationally recognized Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Living History Museum.
This preservation project offers five week-long volunteer opportunities, with all meals, tools, and training provided at no cost. HistoriCorps—a national nonprofit dedicated to preserving historic places through volunteer engagement—will lead the effort.
The Homeplace farm, set against the rolling hills of northwest Tennessee, depicts life in the Civil War era through live demonstrations of 1850s farm life. Interpreters in period clothing showcase daily chores, traditional crafts, and care for rare and endangered livestock breeds, as well as crops planted from heirloom seeds.
Located at Land Between the Lakes, near the Kentucky-Tennessee border, it is approximately 100 miles northeast of Nashville.
The project focus is to replace and repair logs to strengthen and restore the exterior of the Tool Barn, while removing and replacing the current oak shake roof with traditional cedar shakes.
Volunteer Sessions are:
+ August 31 – September 5
+ September 7 – 12
+ September 14 – 19
+ September 21 – 26
+ And September 28 – October 3
Accommodations include free meals provided; camping available for tents, RVs, trailers, campervans, and truck campers.
Skill requirements are none. All tools and mentorship are provided on the site.
HistoriCorps works to connect people to America’s cultural resources while training the next generation of preservationists. Volunteers are vital to making these efforts successful—and slots for this fall’s sessions are still available.
