A former soldier has been federally indicted for the alleged sexual abuse of a minor at Fort Campbell.

A federal grand jury in Paducah returned the indictment on June 10, charging 54-year-old Zachary Martin Young of Swansea, South Carolina, with one count of sexual abuse of a minor.

According to court documents, the alleged offense occurred between March 1999 and February 2000, when Young was stationed at Fort Campbell. Prosecutors say Young, then a soldier, knowingly engaged in a sexual act with a minor between the ages of 12 and 16.

He retired from the U.S. Army in 2014.

Young was arraigned in federal court on July 29 in the Western District of Kentucky. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison. Federal sentencing will be determined by a judge based on the U.S. sentencing guidelines and other factors. There is no parole in the federal system.

The case is being investigated by the FBI’s Hopkinsville Satellite Office and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Raymond McGee, of the Paducah Branch Office, is prosecuting the case.
