HCC Nabs TRIO Student Grant

Hopkinsville Community College has been awarded a five-year federal TRIO Student Support Services grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The grant provides more than $351,000 annually, totaling nearly $1.76 million through 2030. The new grant cycle begins September 1.

The TRIO program is designed to increase college retention and graduation rates for first-generation students, individuals from low-income households, and students with disabilities. Hopkinsville Community College will continue using the funds to offer vital services including tutoring, academic and career advising, financial literacy counseling, college skills workshops, and university transfer trips.

President and CEO Dr. Alissa Young said the grant ensures the college can keep delivering the essential support many students rely on to succeed. She said higher education opens doors to better careers, healthier lives, and overall well-being, and programs like TRIO are instrumental in helping students realize their full potential.

TRIO Student Support Services was established in 1968 under the Higher Education Act to help college students from disadvantaged backgrounds stay in school and graduate. Today, more than 1,000 colleges and universities across the country host these programs, serving more than 202,000 students nationwide.
