For years, Evelyn Bangart has been an active member of the Hopkinsville-Christian County Family YMCA.
She is there frequently, and it makes sense. She’s about to be in her junior year at Hopkinsville High School, is a current employee of Bluegrass Splash, and she’s also a triathlete — carving out careers in swimming, cross country and tennis for the Lady Tigers.
Recently, though, she has started to recognize the costs of attending.
To some families, it’s nominal — a pittance that helps pave the way for facility use and extra-curricular programming.
To others, however, it can be a financial hurdle — and the difference between “let’s go,” and “maybe next year.”
Unprompted, Bangart simply wanted to do something about that.
From 8 AM until 1 PM Saturday, August 9, and for a small fee of $40, vendors of all kinds — new, used, handcrafted, whatever — are encouraged to set up in a designated area of the YMCA.
While all sales go back to the vendors, all collected table fees will go toward sponsoring children seeking specific memberships.
Maybe you’re looking for an indoor location for a yard sale. Maybe you sell sports cards and sports memorabilia, and need an open table. Maybe you’re a numismatist or philatelist, and want to peddle coins and stamps. Maybe you’re a local artisan who paints or takes photos, and likes to sell stills or watercolors. Maybe you’re a small business in need of a weekend test kiosk. Maybe you’re a food truck, and want to push some new samples out into the public.
Whatever the case, this might be the space.
So far, Bangart said she has five vendors signed up for the event. And while that means $200 is on the way to help kids in the future, she would love to see more line up for the opportunity.
If you don’t have a need for a table, Bangart is encouraging visitors to come by that morning and early afternoon, peruse what is for sale — and perhaps make a donation toward this cause.
In search of the perfect plan, Bangart said this sale wasn’t her only idea.
