Kentucky residents affected by the May 16–17 tornadoes now have until August 22 to apply for FEMA assistanceif they experienced uninsured property damage. The disaster declaration covers Caldwell, Laurel, Pulaski, Russell, Trigg, and Union counties.

Before applying, survivors are urged to file insurance claims first, as FEMA assistance cannot duplicate insurance benefits.

There are several ways to apply:

  • Online: DisasterAssistance.gov

  • In person: Visit a local Disaster Recovery Center (find one at fema.gov/DRC or text “DRC” and your ZIP Code to 43362)

  • By app: Use the FEMA mobile app

  • By phone: Call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362

FEMA can explain available programs and connect survivors to recovery resources.

Applicants will need:

  • A working phone number

  • The address of the damaged property and where you’re currently staying

  • Social Security Number

  • A general list of damages and losses

  • Banking information (for direct deposit)

  • Insurance details, if applicable

Be sure to keep contact information current in case FEMA needs to follow up.

FEMA aid is not a replacement for insurance and is intended to cover basic needs and help jumpstart recovery.
