Trigg County Infrastructure Grabs Public Attention At Fiscal Court

Residents of the Sherwood Shores and Woodland Hills subdivisions were pleased during Monday night’s Trigg County Fiscal Court meeting — when they learned of coming chip-and-seal, paving and other possible maintenance efforts to their corner of the community.

Gathered in strong number, citizens of Bluewater Road, Woodland Drive and several other nearby streets lobbied over concerns of road conditions, rusted culverts and pooling waters, neighborhood issues like property cleanliness, overt squalor and signs of illegal dumping — and some road ways that allegedly hadn’t seen considerable attention since former Judge-Executive Berlin Moore was in office.

Come to find out, magistrates and Judge-Executive Stan Humphries were set to approve their 11-mile county-wide paving plan and 15-mile chip-and-seal plan Monday evening — valued at a grand total of $1.6 million.

For reference, Humphries said Trigg County has more than 440 road miles to maintain — with chip-and-seal running about $30,000 per mile, and paving around $100,000 per mile.

What became a bigger discussion, however, is Trigg County’s lack of a zoning ordinance outside of the Cadiz city limits.

It’s not uncommon for rural American communities to maintain free range rights on property — private ownership left to build as it sees fit.

Subdivisions, however, have popped up near the lakes areas of Canton and Linton since the inception of Land Between the Lakes. Their tenants, armed previously with good-natured neighborhood agreements and homeowners associations, no longer carry the same enforcement they once did.

Humphries noted this issue has been a “long discussion for the county,” with Magistrate Mike Wright channeling the past.

In other news;

— Magistrates also approved two major measures for Trigg County, accepting resolutions for expenditures toward Pleasant Hill Church Road Bridge and East Lake Road Bridge. The former will cost $450,000 through KYTC Rural and Municipal Aid, while the latter will come through direct state appropriations and contingency funds.
