Multiple media outlets, including the Lexington Herald Leader, have reported that a Murray police officer shot a man late Monday night — after the suspect allegedly charged at officers with a knife.
According to the Murray Police Department, the incident happened around 11:45 p.m. at an apartment on Brooklyn Drive. Officers were responding to a report of a person acting erratically and armed with a knife.
Police said 23-year-old Eric Saxton was alone in the apartment, and before officers could speak with him, Saxton reportedly exited the residence and charged at them with the knife.
One officer fired, hitting Saxton — and he was transported to Murray-Calloway County Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
He was later transferred to a hospital in Tennessee for additional treatment.
According to Kentucky State Police, Saxton was arrested after being released from medical care. He remains in custody in Tennessee and is awaiting extradition to Kentucky.
Saxton has been charged with attempted murder of a first responder, first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
