Rain is expected for the rest of this week as it leads into the hottest weather of the calendar year.
Scattered rain showers on Monday led to flooding concerns, especially in the northern Pennyrile region, where some areas received over an inch.
Meteorologist David Witten says the risk for severe weather increases on Wednesday and was updated Monday afternoon to include the lakes area and Madisonville.
He says the longer the storms linger on Wednesday afternoon, the greater the chances of severe weather.
He adds that strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Wednesday evening to include damaging winds, large hail, and a possible tornado.
Once the rain and storms move through, western Kentucky should see its first 90-degree weather of the year on Saturday and Sunday with heat index values of 100 to 105 degrees.
