A military aviation incident occurred around 7 p.m. last night in the Fort Campbell training area, involving two U.S. servicemembers. Emergency crews responded immediately to the scene.
One Soldier was pronounced dead, while the second was transported to Blanchfield Army Community Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.
Names of those involved are being withheld pending next of kin notification. The incident remains under investigation.
Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight sent out condolences to the family of the servicemember who lost their life in Wednesday night’s aviation incident, and that the city’s thoughts remain with the injured soldier, as Hopkinsville offers its “full support and assistance to the 101st Airborne Division and the entire Fort Campbell community during this difficult time.”
Christian County Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam noted that their thoughts and prayers remain with “the families, friends and fellow Soldiers affected in this incident,” extending deepest sympathies to all those impacted by this loss. Gilliam also confirmed it is the Department of Defense’s policy, and out of respect to families, to withhold all names involved for the 24 hours after next of kin is notified.
Third District Senator Craig Richardson, of Hopkinsville, said the tragedy serves as a “solemn reminder that the dangers [the] military faces are not limited to distant battlefields,” and that “the call to serve brings risks at home, in training, preparation, and quiet readiness.”
