The Trigg County Sheriff’s Office K-9, Rex, will receive a bullet-and-stab protective vest, courtesy of a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest In K-9’s, Inc.

It will be embroidered with the sentiment: “In honor of K-9 Onexx, Villa Hills, Kentucky.”

The delivery is expected within 10 weeks.

Established in 2009, Vested Interest in K9’s, Inc., is a non-profit organization that has a mission of providing bullet-and-stab protective vests and other assistance to law enforcement K9’s and other related agencies in the country. The armor provided is U.S.-made, custom-fitted and certified by the National Institute of Justice.

Since its inception, the organization has provided more than 6,000 vests valued at $6.9 million, made possible by private and corporate donors. K9’s from all 50 states have been impacted.

Dogs must be at least 20 months old, be actively employed and certified within their agency, and K9’s with expired vests can also partake.

At any moment in the country, there are an estimated 30,000 active law enforcement K9’s.

A single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest, which costs around $1,800 and weighs 4-to-5 pounds, and comes with a five-year warranty.
