Walter “Mort” Adams, age 93, of Cadiz, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Brookdale Clarksville, Tennessee.
He was born on October 21, 1931, in Cadiz, the fourth child of the late Ben Adams and Nell Robertson Adams.
Mort was a graduate of Trigg County High School and went on to further his education at Murray State University, where he not only earned a degree in agriculture but also played football. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in December 1951, serving with the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War. Mort received two Presidential Citations for his unit’s action at Bunker Hill and another for Vegas Hill.
Following his military service, Mort had a successful career with TVA in Cumberland City, where he worked as a unit operator for 33 years before retiring. He was married to Barbara McCoy Adams for 52 years, until her passing on June 13, 2009.
Mort was a member of Linton Methodist Church and a Mason. An avid outdoorsman, he had a gardener’s green thumb, enjoyed fishing and hunting – especially rabbit hunting – and was a fan of most sports, particularly University of Kentucky basketball. His commitment to his health and fitness was extraordinary, as he maintained a routine of 100 pushups and 100 sit-ups daily until he was 91 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife; his grandson, Aaron Adams; four brothers, Howard, Walden, Elbert, and D.C. Adams; and three sisters, Bettie Lou Herndon, Jane Mitchell, and Iva West.
He is survived by his sons, Scotty Adams of Linton, KY and Robert Adams (Kim) of Clarksville, TN; his grandchildren, Jason Adams (Rachel), Candace Adams Griggs (Kai), Amanda Adams (Joe), Cale Ramsey (Anna), Brandon Travis, and Britanni Ashby (Levi); five great-grandchildren, Jude Morris, Alexander Nolta, Trace Ashby, Maya & Emma Ramsey; his brothers, Jesse Adams (Linda) of Cadiz and David Adams (Beth) of Nortonville, KY; his sister, Martha Lumpkin (Jim) of Sherwood, AR; and a special friend, Carole Robertson of Tucson, AZ.
Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, Inc., 138 Main Street in Cadiz, where the family will receive friends after 4:00 PM on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. Funeral services will be at Goodwin Funeral Home at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, April 23, 2025, with Rev. Steve Spitzer officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Adams Cemetery.
